If you are a parent, you can understand the pain of feeding fruits and vegetables to kids. Kids don’t want to eat vegetables, period. The common topic of discussion in parent’s community is “How to feed vegetables to kids”. You always have to think of new ideas to give kids vegetables. My daughter is extremely picky. I have tried so many different ways to feed her vegetables. I used to hide the vegetables somewhere inside her favorite food but she could tell the difference in taste. I used to boil the vegetables and cook them with her food but somehow she didn’t seem to like the color. I can imagine other parents also going through the same phase. That’s the reason I came up with this post.
Your child needs all the essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals while growing up. You are lucky if your child eats fruits and vegetables in salad but most kids don’t. Juicing is one option to make sure they are getting their nutrients. After trying many different combinations, I came up with this “Orange Juice recipe” that kids love.
1. 2 Oranges
2. 2 big size apples (Preferably organic)
3. 2 medium size carrots
1. Wash your fruits and vegetable properly. If you are not using organic produce, soak them in water with a tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar for 15 minutes.
2. Take the top off carrots.
3. Peel the oranges but don’t peel apples as most of the nutrients are in apple’s skin.
4. Cut them in manageable sizes to pass through the juicer.
5. Juice everything.
6. You can further strain the juice for kids as it will have some pulp. I prefer it with pulp for fibers.
Health Benefits of Orange Juice:
The color of this juice is very bright orange. That’s why I call it “Orange juice”. It is very high in Vitamin A and Vitamin C. It is also a good source of potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus and many other essential nutrients.
Tips and Tricks:
For very young kids i.e. toddlers, when milk is still the main portion of their diet, start introducing fruits and vegetables in the solid form first. Once their body gets used to these foods, try giving them a couple of spoons of diluted juice. If they like it and digest it properly (don’t show any symptoms of diarrhea or indigestion), increase the quantity.
For preschoolers and older kids, introduce juice in a small quantity, say ¼ cup and dilute it with the same quantity of water. Increase the amount of juice as they get more used to it.
Much older kids (12 and above) can have a full cup of juice but it is better to start with smaller quantity when you have just introduced juicing.
Some kids will easily drink fresh juice but some kids won’t. If your kids fall in second category, try this trick. Make Fruit Popsicle of Orange Juice.
How to make Fruit Popsicle:
Pour orange juice in the ice tray and put toothpicks inside them. Or you can also get the Popsicle molds and fill it with juice. Freeze them for about 6-8 hours. Kids will love these Popsicle without knowing they are so healthy for them.
